VACCINES IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Live Attenuated - Live yet weaker form of the pathogen, generates a strong cellular and humoral immune response. Killed whole organisms –inactivated pathogens that are therefore safe for inoculation. Subunit vaccines – targeted approach to generate immune response to pathogen toxoids, proteins and polysaccharides. DNA/RNA and viral vector – parts of the pathogen’s genome are recombined into plasmids which are translated in host nuclei to make antigens.
