Opioid overdose is classified by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a nationwide epidemic and a serious public health issue. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines behavioral therapy and medication to treat opioid use disorder (OUD). Three medications are approved for opioid use disorder: methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone.
