Vertex Drops $900 Million to Expand Partnership with CRISPR Therapeutics

Vertex Pharmaceuticals has expanded its collaborative partnership with CRISPR Therapeutics to develop and commercialize a possible cure for sickle cell disease (SCD) and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia (TDT). The focus is on the development of CTX001, an autologous, ex vivo CRISPR-CAS9 gene-edited therapy. Under the terms of the expanded deal, Vertex will be responsible for 60% of the costs of developing, manufacturing and commercializing CTX001 with support from CRISPR Therapeutics.
