Protein gel could help treat type 1 diabetes

Transplanting pancreatic cells alongside a protein-releasing microgel improved diabetes control in monkeys, without the transplanted cells being rejected. People with type 1 diabetes have to inject insulin to regulate their blood sugar, as their immune system mistakenly attacks islet beta cells in the pancreas that normally produce the blood-sugar-lowering hormone insulin.
